NCARC Membership Meeting March 14, 2024.

At Strongsville Library, Strongsville, Ohio.

Meeting opened by Vice President Tom K8DMM at 19:07.

There were 5 members in attendance at the Library: Tom K8DMM, Rob WB2BTI, Fred

WB8UDA, Joe N8QXC, and Paul WB8CYI. There was one Guest Fred (SWL).

There were 6 members in attendance on Zoom: Steve W8IZ, Tom WD8EFF, Heidi

WD8EFK, Dan KB8A, Fred N8AHS, and Mary Lou K8MLS.

Motion to approve minutes of February 8, 2024: A motion to approve the minutes, with

correction, made by Tom WD8EFF, and second by Fred WB8UDA. Motion passed.

Treasurers report: Dan KB8A: Money in the bank, bills paid, a treasurers report was

emailed to the membership.

Field Day: Fred N8AHS: Field Day this year is June 29th and 30th. If anyone wants to stay

overnight (camper, tent) you are welcome to do so.

80 meters was very quiet last year; perhaps we should move the antenna this year.

Tom K8DMM: We should operate with other modes of transmission this year to increase

our standing; CW, FT-8 digital mode for example. The laptops would have to run on

battery and they would have to have a compatible audio card, or external sound card. The

laptops now are used for logging only and therefore can run on AC, but if used for digital

transmission, they would have to be battery operated, along with the router and switch.

Additionally, to run FT-8, precise timing is required. We may need a GPS time source for

the logging/server laptop.

Fundraising: Fred WB8UDA: Will have a meeting next week regarding fundraising.

Membership: Dan KB8A: Nothing new.

Nets: Fred N8AHS: Sundays at 8:00 P.M. on the 2 meter repeater 145.29 with Fred as net

control and Newsline provided by Wayne NC8F. Also, Wednesdays at 7:00 P.M. on the 2

meter 145.29 repeater, a net to discuss technical ideas with Wayne NC8F as net control.

Tom K8DMM: Encourage others to check into the net, especially the Wednesday

technical net.

Public Service: None.

Programs: Tom K8DMM may have something regarding antennas for the April 11, 2024

meeting.

Sunshine: None.

Technical: Tom K8DMM: Repeaters are working well, although the 224.76 repeater will

still need to be reprogrammed to allow PL tones without muting the audio. Steve W8IZ

will work on getting Echolink set up. Also, will look into a phone line for data

transmission.

Website: Tom K8DMM: the problem with the SSL certificate has been resolved by Rick

K8SCI at his expense and the web site is up and running normally again. We thank Rick

for his generous contribution.

Old Business: Tom K8DMM: Regarding inventory, have received addresses for the

location of some club equipment. If you have not yet done so, please forward a list of any

club equipment in your possession.

New Business: Tom K8DMM: As we have only a few club business cards and changes

need to be made anyway, We would like to get new club business cards. A motion to get

new club business cards was made by Steve W8IZ and seconded by Tom WD8EFF.

Motion was passed.

The next meeting will be on Thursday, April 11, 2024 with a Trustee meeting at 6:45

P.M. and membership meeting at 7:00 P.M. at the library and on Zoom.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Fred WB8UDA and seconded by Joe

N8QXC. Meeting adjourned at 19:45.

Minutes submitted by Rob WB2BTI, and Charlene (SWL).

NCARC Membership Meeting May 9, 2024.
At Strongsville Library, Strongsville, Ohio.

Meeting opened by President Wayne NC8F at 19:00.

There were 9 members in attendance at the Library: Tom K8DMM, Wayne NC8F,
 Fred WB8UDA, Norb N8KJT, Rob WB2BTI, Fred N8AHS, Paul WB8CYI, Joe N8QXC,
and Charlene (SWL).  There was one Guest Bill K8VMC.

There were 5 members in attendance on Zoom: Tom WD8EFF, Heidi WD8EFK,
Dan KB8A, Mary Lou K8MLS, and Rick K8SCI.

Motion to approve minutes of April 11, 2024 as published: Joe N8QXC and
second by Fred N8AHS.   Motion passed.

Treasurers report, Dan KB8A:  Money in the bank, bills are paid, a report was
emailed to all members.  Motion to approve the report by Fred WB8UDA and
second by Tom K8DMM.   Motion passed.

Fundraising: None.

Sunshine, Fred N8AHS:  Dave N8QAS’s father passed.   Dave helped with field
day by posting on social media and using a drone to take pictures from the air.
His efforts garnered 100 extra points for the Club.   Fred will send a condolence
card from the Club.

Membership and recruitment, Wayne NC8F:  Have been getting extra check-ins
on the nets and encouraging to attend Club meetings.   We should be more
forward in promoting the Club by inviting people to come to the meetings
and/or join the Club.

Nets, Fred N8AHS:  Need more net control operators.   Wayne NC8F: Net Logger,
a free utility app makes keeping track of check-ins fast and easy.   Also, any
suggestions for topics to discuss during the Wednesday Technet would be
appreciated.

Public Service: None.

Technical, Rick K8SCI:  Along with Dan KB8A, replaced the flaky molded RCA
plug with a soldered plug to fix the intermittent audio problem on the 145.29
repeater.   The 224.76 and 443.15 repeaters’ output appears to be down and
will have to be looked into.   Tom K8DMM: The 224.76 repeater may still have
a problem when using 141.3 tone to key the repeater causing the muting of the
audio, as discussed in previous meetings.   More feedback from users is needed
to see if the problem is still there after changing a line in code and changing a
setting to carrier only that may have fixed it.

Website, Rick K8SCI:  Please check the website periodically to check for errors.
The listing for tonight’s meeting was accidentally deleted and the 2024 field
day info page was missing.   Also, please check the Facebook page for errors.

Field day, Tom K8DMM:  Two weekends ago a party of four setup and checked
all major antennas.   Since we are running only 5 watts, cable length is important.
In the past, add on cable length has degraded power to the antenna.   With 76 feet
of cable, power to the antenna is 4.2 watts, therefore the antenna will have to be
within 76 feet of the radio.   The GAP antenna with 75 feet of cable has 4+ watts
to the antenna.   Regarding preparing for operations:  To use CW, an operator is
needed as well as a radio that will output only 5 watts.    The logging software
needs to be updated.   The network will need to be set up and tested to avoid
problems that came up last year, along with a new router.    To use FT-8 mode,
an interface to the radio is needed, along with software and a GPS device, or
other way to control timing on the server.   Also, how many radios do we want
to use with FT-8, as the radio may require an external sound card.   All this must
be decided and set up and tested before field day.   Tom will set a date to set up
and test everything.    Extra points can be gained by advertising, having officials
invited to attend.

Programs, Tom K8DMM: None.

Old Business, Tom K8DMM:   Inventory; master location sheet of items at 6
locations: 2meter repeater site, 440 repeater site, 220 repeater site, field day
site, equipment A site (Tom’s house), equipment B site (Joe N8QXC house),
equipment C site (Dan KB8A house).   There are 66 pieces of equipment.    Need
to go to repeater sites to record serial numbers.    If anyone else has any
equipment, please let Tom know about it.

Wayne NC8F:   Business cards have been designed and will be submitted to
VistaPrint for printing.

New Business, Rick K8SCI:   The field day page on the website has been updated.
Suggest taking roll call at the meetings to confirm who is present in person and
on Zoom.

The date for the annual NCARC Christmas dinner is December 19, 2024 at
Santo’s Italian Restaurant at 7565 Pearl Road, Cleveland, Ohio 44130.

Next month’s meeting will be on June 13, 2024.

Meeting adjourned by Wayne NC8F at 20:20.

Minutes submitted by Rob WB2BTI.
